Five tricks to choose excavator attachment - Bonovo
In this economy, you need to figure out how to make the most of the excavator’s built-in versatility. Accessories and couplers are a way to use a single machine to accomplish multiple tasks, resulting in more bidding opportunities, increased productivity and reduced operating expenses.
Keep these five tips in mind when choosing attachments.
1. Know before you go.
Help your equipment dealer or rental store’s accessory specialist with the information they need to provide reliable advice. Be prepared to talk about the type of material you’ll be working on (bring a sample if you can) and cycle requirements. Understand specifications – equipment model, configuration, tipping load, lifting/weight capacity, counterweight size and any other basic information. Also note the optional, modified or special features of each machine (for example, changes in hydraulics, tires, engines, etc.). If your accessories require hydraulic pressure, understand the hydraulic flow (GPM) and pressure (PSI) output capacity of your machine, and understand auxiliary hydraulics. Not all machines have a third or fourth hydraulic function capability, but many accessories require this. Finally, if you have a fast coupler, know the make and model number — if you have one, bring the serial number and photo for reference.
2. Check the flow specifications of the hydraulic circuit.
Hydraulic power not only powers the ground, but also lifts, tilts and runs auxiliary circuits to drive accessories. Criteria for “high flow” or “standard flow” may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, so be aware of what is required and how the machine is configured. Typically, high flow circuits exceed 26 gallons per minute and 3,300 psi. High flow machines designated as “XPS” (33 gallons per minute, 4050psi) are able to maintain maximum pressure regardless of connection speed or operating conditions, at low idle or high idle. A typical flow rate for a standard flow machine is 22 gallons per minute.
3. Match the accessory configuration with the machine.
Device manufacturers can provide tools in a variety of configurations. Direct drive or planetary drive spirals, for example, can be used on standard hydraulic flow machines. These configurations help maximize the capacity of the hydraulic circuit in medium load applications. The high flow planetary drive auger on the high flow hydraulic press is suitable for extreme work applications. The high flow configuration is designed for maximum torque, and the hydraulic hoses and seals are able to withstand additional pressure while maintaining a leak-free connection. In general, machines with high flow hydraulics can operate accessories designed for standard flow machines, but the opposite operation (high flow tools with standard flow machines) is not recommended. The hydraulic system of a standard flow machine does not provide the flow required for proper tool operation.
4. Consider quick couplers for quick and easy changes to connections.
Fast couplers that allow you to change barrels or accessories from the cab are an ideal productivity booster. For example, Cat®Pin Grabber coupler allows you to:
- One excavator can move quickly from one task to another, and a group of similarly equipped excavators can share a common inventory of working tools.
- Change the size of the bucket or switch to another accessory within seconds, never leaving the cab.
- Pick up the bucket in the opposite direction, clean out the corners, and go back to digging.
- Use visual and auditory indicators to confirm attachment coupling to the operator seat.

5. Not sure what you need? Work with your dealer.
When in doubt, work with your dealer to determine the best accessory option for your operation. Or, you might find new ways to configure the machine to take advantage of more accessories, by increasing the size of the balance weight or using different arm bar combinations. You may also find that the cost of one machine with multiple tools is less than the cost of two.
